Case Studies

Various projects are currently being implemented in support of the further development of the Bio-rights approach. The progress of these projects will be documented on this website.

January 2008 - A case description on Bio-rights experiences within the Green Coast project has been added. By providing sustainable development opportunities to local communities in tsunami impacted areas in Southeast Asia in return for their involvement in coastal restoration this project has significantly contributed to both the recovery of livelihoods and the restoration of coastlines after the tsunami.

July 2007 - Two additional documents have been developed, providing more information on the Mali case and on mangrove rehabilitation activities in central Java, Indonesia.

April 2006 - We have prepared two progress reports for the case studies in Mali and Kalimantan.

  • Mali - providing micro-credits for local women groups to develop alternative sources of income, in exchange for help as eco-guards to raise awareness on the need for sustainable waterbird harvesting.
  • Kalimantan - encouraging local communities to replant trees in exchange for micro-credits, with the added bonus of letting the loan become a grant if 70% of the trees survive the first 3 years.
Above initiatives have been implemented by Wetlands International and partner organisations and funded by a range of donors including the British and Royal Netherlands embassies, DGIS and Oxfam Novib. For further information regarding these projects please contact:

Furthermore, below you can find a summary of the potential role of Bio-rights in three different target areas:
  • Mali - Wetlands, water birds and a wetland-dependent population.
  • Costa Rica – A proposed National Park and plans for creating sustainable incomes in the rainforests of Central America.
  • Kalimantan – Restoring tropical peatlands in Borneo and investing in new sustainable agricultural products.
We have developed a number of booklets with information on all three demonstration projects.
